November

Its a grey & wet Friday in Cape Town.  Yes its November, no it shouldn’t still be this cold. Instead of being at a desk in an office with a latte I’d like to be under a rug, next to a lamp with a cup of tea doing something crafty.  I have a friend who has gorgeous red hair & the warmest heart, she lives in London.  I’d rather she were sitting across from me with her own craft, tea & rusks than doing whatever she does on a Friday morning in London.

Now I know what you think when I say she’s my friend.  The truth is, though we have lots of mutual friends, we have only met a handful of times & that was years ago now.  I got to know her through her gorgeous blog (which she is rather quiet on at the moment, as life goes sometimes).  Now we chat online & via facebook regularly enough to call her friend, far as she may be away.  I’m secretly hoping she’ll move back soon.

Through her blog posts, in the midst of what was my super organized busy life, I was reminded of the me that loves a good creative mess; the kind that takes a few hours to make & doesn’t get packed away for weeks.  The me that knows that wandering around alone for an entire Saturday without achieving anything or seeing anyone doesn’t count as a waste – not even close.  Who understands the soul warming value of scones with jam & cream and a steaming pot of Earl Grey tea.  I could do with one of those ‘wasted’ days.

November is my birthday month.  Mostly I delight in birthdays.  Not just because I love to have a glass full of champagne & a room full of friends. It has become my personal version of the American Thanksgiving.  Yes friends & food feature, wholly, but its also good excuse to stop & think about life a little. To measure all that’s happened since the last time you celebrated, & be grateful for the great & the small that has passed.  My most recent trip around the sun has been tumultuous to say the least, but I am cultivating a grateful heart nonetheless.  I am a lot better at feeling sorry for myself than I am being grateful for what I have at the moment, but I do love a good list.  SO I have tricked myself into being more grateful via the temptation of a good list 🙂  I hope to post a few here soon…

I’ll close with one of my favorite quotes, & then go give thanks for a while.

Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for. ~Epicurus~
